SALTO EL LIMON

The Bay of Samana, in the region northeast of the Dominican Republic, becomes in the period between January and March, the place with the highest concentration of megapterae novaeangliae: it is estimated that every year pass in the Bay of Samana least 10,000 whales.
Their name is Spanish "ballenas jorobadas" which means "whale with a hump". In fact, these whales have no hump, the name was given to them for the curvature feature that takes them back to wherever they dive deep. These whales are among the largest marine mammals: an average size between 12 and 15 meters and can weigh up to 60 tons.
The ballenas jorobadas spend the summer to feed in the Gulf of Maine, Newfoundland, Greenland or Iceland, taking advantage of the rich fishing banks, to accumulate stocks of fat that will serve them as an energy reserve for the transition. Their long journey will lead them to gather all in the Greater Antilles, where they will spend the winter to mate and reproduce. The warm waters, quiet and sheltered of this area of the Caribbean are in fact the ideal place to give birth and wean their sons.
